Galleria DuePuntoZero presents Memento Mori, the fifth group exhibition of the circuit Seven: International Contemporary Art.
7 MONTHS.
7 THEMES.
7 EVENTS.
7 WAYS TO INTERPRET CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY THROUGH ART.
We are not eternal but we often live as if we were. Centuries ago, the Memento Mori – literally “remember that you must die” – was widely embraced by society, also through art; witness to this is the medieval Danse Macabre, where skeletons danced together with peasants, bishops and emperors, demonstrating how we will all end up the same regardless of our social class. Today, however, we avoid thinking about old age and death, trying to postpone them as much as possible and pursuing increasingly unattainable goals. This mentality makes us stressed, depressed and frustrated because as Virgil wrote: “Time flies irreparably” and our existence inevitably wears out. We cannot slow down time but we can decide how to use it. The week, in fact, was introduced to divide the month into more manageable periods and better control events.
How do we perceive time today? How is it represented in contemporary art?
